SAILS Initiatives

Three Student Learning Outcomes Competency to apply effective learning strategies to enhance their success in courses across the curriculum

Use of academic support services designed to enhance their learning strategies Improved academic success in key gateway courses.

Gateway Courses Developmental Reading Developmental Writing Intermediate Algebra College Algebra Composition I General Biology I

Initiative One Integrate instruction in learning strategies across the curriculum. Instruct in three concepts.

Read to Understand Listen Actively Organize for Effectiveness

Spring 2009 Assessment Committee to create appropriate learning objectives and rubrics to assess the three concepts

Fall 2009 Assessment committee to select two learning strategies to implement in each of the three areas

Spring 2010 Provide training in the selected learning strategies

Fall 2010 Implement the learning strategies in four sections of each gateway course with faculty choosing which of the selected strategies to use.

Initiative Two Develop a free, enhanced study skills workshop and a free study skills course.

S Study Skills Workshop Targeted to students who have been accepted into the Nursing program and various Allied Health programs

Study Skills Course Open to all students 3 credit hours Follows a flex schedule Hybrid course Begin in Spring 2012

Initiative Three Tailor Learning Center and Library services to promote student and faculty awareness of various learning styles and the relationship between learning styles and learning strategies to student success.

Initiative Four Establish a professional development program.

Annual Summer Academy conducted by outside expert QEP Workshops during Fall and Spring in-services

Intra- and inter- disciplinary workshops during the academic year Increase faculty communications regarding successful teaching/learning strategiesSAILS form

Provide mentoring to adjunct faculty and bring new faculty aboard Develop SAILS Web page for faculty
