All About Plants!

Parts of a Plant

What part of the plant carries water and nutrients to other parts of the plant? stems

What are the four main parts of a plant? stems, flowers/fruit, leaves, roots

#1 is what part of a plant? leaves

#2 is what part of a plant? flowers

Which part of the plant supports the leaves, flowers or cones? The Stem

#3 is what part of a plant? fruit

#4 is what part of a plant? stems

#6 is what part of a plant? roots

What is the main job of the leaves on a plant? To trap sunlight to make its own food.

What part of a plant produces the seeds? Flower/fruit

What are the 2 main jobs of the roots on a plant? To anchor a plant and to absorb nutrients from the soil.

What part of a plant is a carrot an example of ? roots

Corn, peas, beans, walnuts and almonds are all examples of this part of a plant. seeds

Asparagus is an example of TWO parts of a plant. Name both parts. stems and flowers

Cauliflower and broccoli are both examples of this part of a plant. flowers

Name 2 types of leaves that you can eat. Lettuce, cabbage, spinach, etc.

Seeds

What do you call the baby plant inside the seed? embryo

This part of a seed is like the ‘bellybutton” of a seed … it’s the scar on the seed coat where it was attached to the plant’s stalk. hilum

This is where the stored food of the seed is. cotyledon

What does a seed contain that provides energy for germination? stored food

What is this part of a seed called? embryo

What is this part of a seed called? cotyledon

What is this part of a seed called? seed coat

Living Things

Where do ALL living things get their energy from? The Sun

Name the FOUR things most plants need to survive. sunlight, air, water and nutrients

What chemical makes a plant green? chlorophyll

Are HUMANS producers or consumers? Why? They need to eat other things to survive.

Are green PLANTS producers or consumers? Why? They can make their own food

What does a plant produce as a result of photosynthesis? oxygen and sugar (glucose)

Adapts/changes to the environment The leafs on a tree change color when the weather turns cold … this is one way a tree ______. Adapts/changes to the environment

What 3 things does a plant need in order for photosynthesis to occur? Carbon dioxide, sun and water

Pollination Review

What part of the plant makes the seeds? The Flower

Where in the plant is most of the food made? In the leaves

Name four requirements plants needs in order to thrive. Air Water Nutrients Light

What is the process by which plants produce food? Photosynthesis

Name the four ways seeds can be dispersed (travel.) Carried by wind Carried by animals Carried by people Carried by water

What is the leaf-like often showy part of the flower which helps capture the attention of a pollinator (bee) called? The Petals

The length of time from beginning of development to death of the plant is called its Life span – that may include: Seed Young plant Mature plant Dying plant

What is the sequence of stages of growth in the life of an organism called? The Life cycle

What the young plant contained within a seed is called? An Embryo
