2 Imagine what the world would be like without plants
life on earth could not exist without plants plants are directly or indirectly a source of food for all humans

3 What are the functions of the leaves?
Leaves make food for the plant Leaves absorb light energy from the sun and carbon dioxide from the air and releases O2 Leaves also absorb water in the air (humidity) Leaves also store the food that is created for the plant

4 What are the functions of the stem?
Transports water and nutrients to the leaves Carries the food produced by the leaves to other parts of the plant Supports the plant's leaves and flowers

5 Activity Time!!!! Place a stalk of celery in a cup of red-colored water for 24 hours Remove the stalks and observe how far the red water has traveled Cut a cross-section of the stalk to inspect the location of the colored water

6 What are the functions of the roots?
Anchor the plant and hold it up Absorb water and nutrients from the soil Store food for longer periods of time so the plant can survive when it loses its leaves

Attract insects for pollination Produce seeds and fruit The site of plant reproduction

8 Week Long Assignment Keep a record of the food you eat during a one week period Identify all the foods on your lists that come from plants Identify the part of the plant from which the food is made

9 Conclusion Plants are a basic component of the food chain:
