Student Council Informational Meeting August 28th, 8:00AM 2018-2019

Student Council Overview BMJH is looking forward to the start of an exciting new school year and is looking for students to participate in Student Council this year! BMJH’s Student Council will be responsible for several events and activities this year, including school spirit activities, school dances, and other events to involve all students in the BMJH experience. Students who are interested in student council must: Be flexible Exhibit the potential for leadership Have a genuine interest in the welfare of others Consistently portray qualities of responsibility, empathy, courage, integrity and perseverance.

To Run for Student Council To run for a Student Council Officer position, you must have 100% attendance at all Student Council Officer Meetings (held 8:00 am) You must maintain a B average in all courses at the end of each grading period, and you may not have any office discipline referrals. Failure to comply with these conditions will result in removal from Student Council Office.

Student Council Officer Positions President : She or he will run the meetings and take overall responsibility for organizing activities. Being president is a lot of work, but very rewarding. The President must supply one of the advisors with an agenda at least one day prior to the meeting. The President represents the Student Council in speaking to the student body, parents, and administration. Above all, the President must be thoughtful and a good listener, so that all opinions and ideas can be openly discussed in student council meetings. Vice-President : He or she must be ready to take on the responsibilities of the President when the President is not available for a meeting or the President is no longer in office. The Vice-President is also in charge of organizing committees.

Student Council Officer Positions Secretary : The Secretary of Student Council is in charge of organizing the official records of Student Council and taking notes at meetings (“minutes”). She or he is in charge of all correspondence for Student Council. The Secretary should have good handwriting, organization and basic computer skills. Treasurer : The Treasurer of Student Council keeps track of all our money including our bank account, ticket sales, and payments made for our expenses. The treasurer should also be able to fill in for the Secretary to take notes if the Secretary cannot attend a meeting. Historian : The Historian of Student council is responsible for keeping a record of all student council activities. They will record descriptions of the events and take photos.

Important Dates Student Council Officer Application Pick Up: Tuesday August 28th – Friday September 7th from Ms. Rolater (Room 745) Student Council Officer Application Due: Tuesday September 11th at 8:30am Turn in to Ms. Rolater (Room 745). LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! Campaign Time: Monday September 17th- Friday September 21st (Only those that get a letter from me on Friday September 14th during 3rd will be allowed to campaign.) Voting: Friday, September 21 via Advisory classes Election results: Announced via morning announcements Monday, September 24th 1st Student Council Officer Meeting: Tuesday September 25th - 8:00 am ATTENDANCE REQUIRED!

Running for Office Check List Student Council Application & Application Questions (due Wed., September 13 @ noon) Parent/Guardian Acknowledgement Form (due with application Wed., September 13 @ noon) Teacher Recommendation Forms Complete (2) *Your teacher will complete each form and return them to Ms. Rolater via teacher mailbox.

Once your application has been received Campaign Time Frame: Monday September 17th- Friday September 21st. Your name will be on the voting ballot on Friday, Sept. 21st. Winners will be announced on Monday, Sept. 24th during morning announcements and winners must attend a mandatory meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25th. These are the only ways you are allowed to campaign: -Make posters These can only be posted in the 8th grade hallways. You must provide your own tape, and I must initial every poster that you put up. You are only allowed to put posters up in the mornings during tutorial times. If you post posters that do not have my initials on them, your application may be withdrawn. -Word of mouth Simply tell people to vote for you. -Flyers If you want to pass out flyers, I need to initial the original copy. Once I initial the original copy, I will not have to initial all the copies made.
