Achieving a Healthy Body Weight Chapter 19 Achieving a Healthy Body Weight

Maintaining a Healthy Body Weight Accepting your Body Body shape often has little to do with weight Body shape is often genetic You can change the amount of fat or muscle you have but you can’t change your shape. What is a Healthy Weight? It is more important to be healthy and fit than look like a model Set-Point Theory: theory that suggests that a body is apt to maintain a particular weight because of its own inner controls. After a body looses or gains weight the body attempts to go back to its previous wieght

Body Weight Classification Body-Weight Classification System: System used in Canada that assesses the risk that adults have for developing health problems. The body weight classification system uses Body Mass Index, and waist circumference as a method of measurement Body Mass Index: Weight/height. A BMI over 30 is associated with health risks Waist circumference: A waist of 40 inches in males or 35 inches in females is associated with higher chance of health problems

Limitations of Body Weight Classification System 1. Young adults who have not stopped Growing. 2. Adults who are naturally very lean. 3. Adults who have a muscular body build 4. Adults over the age of 65. 5. People of different racial or ethnic group. BMI was developed for Caucasian and European people, African people may not have the same health risks

Waist-Hip Ratio Waist-hip ration: uses a comparison of waist measurement and hip measurement to assess a person’s body type. Pare shape people carry fat on hips and thights Apple shaped carry fat over abdomen Apple shape is associated with more health risks. Measured by dividing waist measurement by hip measurement.
