taking assessment beyond the classroom What Are They Learning? taking assessment beyond the classroom

the big question what knowledge, skills or abilities are students taking away from their time with us? OK so what do i mean by assmt activities?

TODAY’S GOAL: To brainstorm ways to assess student learning beyond the classroom At the degree/certificate level At the institutional level OK so what do i mean by assmt activities?

guided pathways: starting with student goals Think for a minute about assessment

learning outcomes: a promise to students BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE FOR TRANSFER (AS-T) Program Learning Outcomes: Students completing this program will be able to: Prepare and analyze financial statements. Prepare and manage an operating budget. Evaluate the impact of current economic conditions on a business. Assess the legal implications of business decisions.

cross-disciplinary learning goals (institutional learning outcomes)

milestones along the way

No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine….

we don’t need another KSI-style datapool Student success Transfer Grades Withdrawal Retention Persistence Degree completion Hours in lab (SARS) Survey data Frin the perspective that makes most sense to the student

we need another perspective does our AS-T in Business Admin deliver as promised? do our collective efforts help students to (for instance) think critically? Frin the perspective that makes most sense to the student

old Program Review assessment language focused on course-level SLO data served to audit courses Frin the perspective that makes most sense to the student

new Program Review assessment language asks about program assessment asks about interdisciplinary assessment asks about any activities, at the program or interdisciplinary level, intended to improve student learning Get faculty to TALK ABOUT things they are most likely already doing! Not about auditing courses.

help! Get faculty to TALK ABOUT things they are most likely already doing! Not about auditing courses.

help! “I don’t know how to assess the degree in my discipline.” “I can’t track the students’ grades - it’s impossible.” “What sort of interdisciplinary activities can I possibly come up with? I’m just on my own here.” Get faculty to TALK ABOUT things they are most likely already doing! Not about auditing courses.

we will be Thinking of clever ways to take a snapshot of student learning in a degree or certificate in institutional outcomes These activities could be organized by faculty at the discipline/service level organized at the College level by CAE/CAC Get faculty to TALK ABOUT things they are most likely already doing! Not about auditing courses.

At the institutional level At the degree/certificate level TODAY’S GOAL: To brainstorm ways to assess the quality of student learning beyond the classroom At the institutional level At the degree/certificate level OK so what do i mean by assmt activities?

possible methods surveys embedded / tagged assignments capstone assignments shared rubric / assignment blueprints student activities or projects OK so what do i mean by assmt activities?
