3 Collaboration & Alignment
Educator Effectiveness Common Core State Standards CCSS and educator evaluations are the latest initiatives that impact all educators. We are working together to create coherence among these critical instructional reforms: implementation of the CCSS for student learning and new standards-based teacher and administrator evaluation systems. And we are working together to provide meaningful and coherent opportunities for teachers to enhance instruction in ways that will help each of their students meet he more rigorous expectation of the CC. It is our goal to support districts in their local implementation of CCSS and educator effectiveness by building an understanding of the connections among these initiatives at the district, school and classroom levels. Together EE policies and CCSS have the transformative potential to significantly improve outcomes and equity for students.

4 Alignment & Coherence Common Core Educator Effectiveness
Establish the goals for student learning - what students should know and be able to do Goal to prepare all students to succeed in college and careers Calls for instructional shifts Establish teaching & leading performance standards – what educators should know and be able to do Goal to improve teaching and increase student learning Calls for feedback to teachers to support instructional shifts CCSS: Calls on teachers to focus on deepening students’ understanding of what they are learning, enhancing their problem solving skills, and improving their ability to communicate ideas. EE: Teacher eval systems must provide enough guidance and detailed feedback to teachers to support the instructional shifts necessary for successful CC implementation. Rubric – Professional practice frameworks – series of guideposts for what teachers should know and be able to do to facilitate this learning; Rubric describes continuum of performance Not to say evaluate teachers solely on teaching to CCSS. Teaching performance standards are applicable to all teachers regardless of subject area, grade level, or specialty. Professional practice frameworks define important expectations of all teachers as professionals – such as collaborating with colleagues, regularly analyzing their practice for the purpose of improving it, and supporting school initiatives.

Common Core State Standards Common Core State Standards Instruction Aligning the Reforms Graphic helps us think about how these efforts at instructional improvement might work together to drive instruction toward the goal of reaching the standards. The CCSS for student learning set the destination, and teachers’ instruction is the chief means of getting students from here to there. Teacher performance standards for evaluation offer guideposts to teachers to reach that destination, providing direction along the way. The performance feedback during evaluation ideally helps teachers know whether they are on the right track – and if they are not, how to get back on track. Meanwhile, professional learning supports can help teachers enhance their instruction to get students where they need to go, so students can meet the expectations of the CC.
