Section 5.4 Study Materials Directions Please have a piece of paper and pencil ready! As you click through the slides, pause to work out the Practice Problems on your own. Check your answer to each Practice Problem. If you get a problem wrong or if you want to hear the explanation, watch the video linked to the slide. At the end of the slide show, work out the answers to the Selected Textbook Exercises. When you have completed Sections 5.4 – 5.7, complete Chapter 5 Online Homework.

Equations and Expressions Section 5.4 Study Materials Equations and Expressions An equation is a mathematical statement that two expressions are equal. For example, 2 + 5 = 7 is an equation. Note: An equation contains an equal sign, “ = ”; an expression does not contain an equal sign. We solve equations, and we simplify expressions.

Equations and Expressions Section 5.4 Study Materials Equations and Expressions

Section 5.4 Study Materials Equations In this section, we will learn how to solve linear equations in one variable; such an equation can have no solution, exactly one solution, or infinitely many solutions. In this course, we will only consider linear equations in one variable that have exactly one solution. In general, solving an equation involves finding all numbers that can replace the variable to make the equation a true statement.

Addition Property of Equality Section 5.4 Study Materials Addition Property of Equality Adding the same expression to both sides of an equation will produce an equivalent equation. Therefore, adding the same expression to both sides of an equation will not change the equation’s solution.
