Respiratory System The respiratory system is the body system that provides body cells with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide that cells produce as waste.
The Respiratory System. Why do you need to breathe? All the cells in your body require oxygen. Without it, they couldn't move, build, reproduce, and turn.

The Respiratory System

Watch Brainpop: Respiratory System & Asthma Lungs Watch Brainpop: Respiratory System & Asthma Lungs help the body breathe.   The upper part of the chest is almost filled with lungs.   Lungs can hold about as much air as a basketball!

Lungs Working With the Heart Lungs trade air with blood. The heart pumps used blood to the lungs. The lungs take the carbon dioxide and other things that the body cannot use out of the blood. The lungs add oxygen to the blood. After the trading is done, the blood goes back to the heart to be pumped to the body to deliver oxygen to the cells.

What makes up the respiratory system? Lungs you have two lungs. the lung on the left side of your body is a bit smaller than the lung on the right. This extra space on the left leaves room for your heart. Your lungs are protected by your rib cage Trachea Windpipe that delivers oxygen to lungs Bronchi / Bronchial tubes The windpipe breaks off into two tubes called bronchi. The bronchi branch off like a tree into bronchial tubes 4. Alveoli Tiny air sacs at the tips of the bronchial tubes Lungs contain over 600 million alveoli Each alveoli is surrounded by capillaries 5. Diaphragm Beneath the lungs is the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle that works with your lungs to allow you to inhale (breathe in) and exhale (breathe out) air.

trachea bronchi alveoli bronchioles diaphragm

How do Alveoli work???? When you breath in, your lungs expand and take in oxygen. This oxygen goes straight to your alveoli. The capillary that surrounds the alveoli picks up that oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide to be exhaled.

How does the Diaphragm work???? When your diaphragm pulls down, it not only leaves more space for the lungs to expand but also lowers the internal air pressure. Outside, where the air pressure is greater, you suck in air in an inhale. The air then expands your lungs like a pair of balloons. When your diaphragm relaxes, the cavity inside your body gets smaller again. Your muscles squeeze your rib cage and your lungs begin to collapse as the air is pushed up and out your body in an exhale.

True or False? We inhale because the air pressure inside the chest cavity is less than outside the body. T The lungs are composed of hundreds of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream in the trachea. F The bronchial tubes branch off from the trachea into an upside down Y.
