RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Function of Respiratory System To bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide

BREATHING RESPIRATION Movement of the chest that brings air into the lungs and removes waste and gases Oxygen is used by the cells to release energy from glucose

glucose O2 Glucose-- energy needs to be released mitochondrion Hey remember me?

Organs of the Respiratory System 1. PHARYNX -Tubelike passageway used for food, liquid, and air. The lower end of it has a flap called the EPIGLOTTIS which prevents food or liquid from entering the airway. 2. Air passes through the LARYNX which contains vocal cords used to speak.

3. The TRACHEA is a long tube held open by rings of cartilage. 4. The trachea branches into 2 tubes called BRONCHI (each leads to a different LUNG) which branch into smaller tubes. 5. The smallest tubes are called BRONCHIOLES and they end in clusters of ALVEOLI Organs of the Respiratory System

Oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide and wastes products exit blood through CAPILLARY walls. Organs of the Respiratory System

Muscle that contracts and relaxes to move gas into and out of the lungs- ________________ Organs of the Respiratory System

Signals from the ____________________ tell muscles in your _____________________ and ________________________ to contract and relax. If carbon dioxide levels in blood increase, ____________________________increases (and if they decrease the same….) Why do you breathe?

How do I breathe in? 1st-Air rushes in because pressure inside is less than outside. 2nd-Your diaphragm (the muscle under your lungs) contracts (moves down) to make room for more air. 3rd-Your rib cage expands. http://www.beltina.org/health-dictionary/breathing.html

How do I breath OUT? 1st-Air rushes out because the pressure inside is greater than outside. 2nd-Your diaphragm (the muscle under your lungs) relaxes (moves up) and pushes air out of the lungs. 3rd-Your rib cage returns to normal shape.
