AGENTS FOR CHANGE Being the Positive Influence and Understanding Peoples Response to Changes in the Workplace JULY 2017 Presenter Alli Taylor

The Change Model The Change Model describes the reactions to change in three terms: endings, transitions and beginnings. Endings- some things cease to be. Transitions- becoming conscious of what is ending and what is beginning Beginnings- aligning yourself to a common purpose and vision Change is inevitable but growth is optional!

THE STAGES PEOPLE GO THROUGH DURING CHANGE RESISTANCE Anger Loss and hurt Stubbornness Blaming others Complaining Getting Sick Doubting your ability Surface Resistance – The only way you can deal with it. DENIAL “How good were things in the past.” “They don’t really mean it.” “It can’t happen here.” Numbness Everything as usual attitude Minimising Refusing to hear new information

STAGES PEOPLE GO THROUGH DURING CHANGE 3. EXPLORATION “What’s going to happen to me?” Seeing possibilities Chaos Indecisiveness Unfocussed work Energy Clarifying goals Seeing resources Exploring alternatives Learning new skills Let’s try something 4. COMMITMENT “Where am I headed?” Focus Teamwork Vision Cooperation Balance Renegotiate Roles and Responsibilities Let me visit PITY CITY

Harvard Business Review on CHANGE – Why we don’t like it Relationships Loss of Status Extra responsibility Job Security Could it also be that they don’t know WHY they are doing this - or trust the messenger

Factors Needed for Successful Change Pressure for change: internal or external - priority Clear shared vision: purpose for the change Capacity for change: resources and skills Actionable first steps: go for small wins and gain a sense of achievement & momentum Model the way: practising the values and behaviours that reflect the vision Reinforce & solidify change: reward and recognition Evaluate and improve: need to monitor success

HOW I CHANGE MY BEHAVIOUR UNDER CHANGE I – Becomes Bossy – Histrionic – Emotional Needs: To be able to talk and tell you how I feel. Will be enthusiastic if you show an interest in what I am doing S – Becomes Reclusive – Quiet – Surrenders – Harmony and everyone’s needs met Time to practice whatever I need to change Acceptance and assurance that they are doing a good job.

C – Becomes Introvert – Avoids disagreements – Very resistant Needs – To be left in peace to get on with the job Won’t tell you if they are struggling so must be asked Assurance that they are doing a good job D –Becomes –Bossy – Impatient – Lacking in Empathy Non emotional conversations Big picture and bottom line Responsibility and to be in control

Connect With Others Someone at school you can talk to freely Develop at least 3 support systems: Someone at school you can talk to freely Someone not at your school but who understands your situation who you can talk to freely Someone socially who you can talk to freely Maintaining good relationships with family and friends gives you a foundation in any and all of life’s curves. Seek out people who are supportive and respectful and take care to avoid those who are critical and controlling. Accepting help from others while having the ability to help yourself gives you a depth of contact in which you can get the support you need while, at the same time, getting fulfillment in helping others. Being part of a faith group can assist with your spiritual grounding and growth. Being part of a self-help group can give you emotional support.
