New York Henry Hudson -- Englishmen sailing for Dutch -- Excellent place for trading with Native Americans --New Amsterdam: trading post brings economic opportunity (eventually becomes NYC) -- English and Dutch rivals: English gains possession of the colony Allowed to buy land and religious freedom for– Catholics, French Protestants, and Jews

-- NY starts as a Dutch colony and turns into an English one New York and New Jersey The shared history: founded for religious freedom and economic opportunity -- NY starts as a Dutch colony and turns into an English one New York New Jersey -- Controlled by King Charles II of England  gives control to brother The Duke of York, James II -- Too large for James II to control -- James II gives land to Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret -- 2 separate colonies with 2 separate charters

Pennsylvania William Penn -- Quaker: branch of Christianity which valued spiritual communication with God; believed in equality -- not popular in England -- Penn: proposes to King Charles II an idea to get rid of unpopular Quakers and take them to where religion can be practiced freely

Penn’s beliefs -- very different than other colonies -- believed all people should be treated with respect; including Native Americans --- Not all encounters with Native Americans and colonists were peaceful

Delaware Why is it founded? Began as a part of NY Penn’s document attracts colonists from all over Europe; including Sweden (founders of Delaware) Considered part of the Lower Counties of PA Penn allowed them to elect their own assembly and obtain their own charter
