Joint OECD/Eurostat data collection on municipal waste Item 6.1 Working Group meeting on waste statistics 1-2 March 2016 Eurostat

Experiences with merged collection Problems with the new breakdowns: by origin and by type of waste Origin often not known Waste generated by households Waste generated by other sources Type of waste: Problems with definition of waste streams Household and similar waste defined as EWC-Stat 10.1 contains bulky waste - > double counting Bulky waste may contain WEEE

Experiences with merged collection Recommendations from consultation with OECD : Household and similar waste which shall be reported: MW generated – Bulky waste (WEEE which is collected together with bulky waste cannot not be identified) Bulky waste shall cover 20 03 07 WEEE should cover respective materials collected under LoW 20 01 Breakdown should be equal to MW generated

Merged dataset of Eurostat and OECD Municipal waste generated by origin: Waste generated by households Waste generated by other sources by type of waste: Generation of household and similar waste Generation of bulky waste Generation of WEEE Total waste treatment Recovery Material recycling (R2 – R11, excluding part of R3) Composting and digestion (part of R3) Incineration / energy recovery (R1) Other recovery Disposal Incineration / disposal (D10) Landfill / disposal (D1-D7, D12) Other disposal Total incineration (R1 + D10) Coverage of the municipal waste collection system
