2 Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2006 - 2026 Approved by City Council in 2006 To be reviewed in 2011/12 (and 2016/17) No prescribed review format Transport, Environment and Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Committee Proposed wider consultation through the BEP and Sustainability Forum.

5 Overview – Waste Arisings and Disposal 2011 Total municipal waste is around 500,000 tonnes per annum. Of this: 350,000 tonnes to Energy from Waste 120,000 tonnes recycled/composted 30,000 tonnes landfilled.

6 Strategy – Recycling Targets 2006 – Recycling / Composting rate of 17% Strategy target – to double recycling / composting within 5 years (34% by 2011/12) Strategy target – to achieve a 40% recycling / composting rate by the end of the Strategy period (2026).

7 Recycling Performance 2010/11 – 32% Recycling and Composting. July 2011 – 34% Around average for Core Cities Target on course to being achieved

8 Waste Minimisation – Strategy Targets 2006 – 560,000 tonnes of municipal waste. Growth in waste stream estimated at 2% per year, decreasing over Strategy term. Target – aim to be better than average by reducing household waste relative to the average Authority. Target – aim to be better than average for Metropolitan Authorities for household waste arisings.

9 Waste Minimisation Performance 2011/12 – estimated 500,000 tonnes of municipal waste. 2010/11 703 kg of residual waste per household. BCC target 2011/12 = 690kg per household Metropolitan Cities average (2009/10) = 628 kg per household Target off course

10 Treatment and Disposal – Strategy Targets Waste Disposal Contract to 2019 Energy from Waste Plant 350,000 tonnes per annum capacity Landfill tax - £56/tonne and rising by £8/tonne per year. Target – to be consistently among the best performers in England for minimising waste sent to landfill.

11 Treatment and Disposal – Performance 2004/05 – Birmingham landfilled 24% of municipal waste. 2010/11 – just 10.38% landfilled. 2012 – currently around 4%. Target exceeded.
