Figure 1 Mechanisms by which GBPs Mediate Immunity to Intracellular Pathogens Toxoplasma gondii actively invades host cells and resides in a specialized nonfusogenic parasitophorous vacuole (PV). GBPs are proposed to recruit IRGs, leading to the disruption of PV membrane and the killing of the parasite. In contrast, intracellular bacteria such as Mycobacteria and Listeria are phagocytosed by the host cell. GBPs are proposed to recruit autophagic machinery, antimicrobial peptides, and components of the NADPH oxidase to the phagosome. The NADPH oxidase generates reactive oxygen species, which are involved in sequestering Listeria within the phagosome and controlling bacterial infection.
