2 Figure 1 Hypoxia Induced by Activated Neutrophils Protects Epithelial Cells Activated neutrophils (N) infiltrate the mucus membrane during gastrointestinal inflammation. NADPH oxidase activity consumes oxygen for production of reactive oxygen species H2O2 and hypochlorous acid, OCl−. The resulting lowering of oxygen tension in epithelial cells (E) indicated by darker shading results in increased levels of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF), a transcription factor that activates transcription of genes that result in protection of the mucosal cells and reduces inflammation.
