What is Health? The state of well-being in which all of the components of health are in balance

5 Components of Health Physical health: the way your body functions Emotional health: expressing your emotions in a positive, nondestructive way Social health: quality of relationships with others

5 Components of Health Mental health: ability to recognize reality & cope with demands of life Environmental health: keeping air & water clean, food safe, land enjoyable & safe

Health Risk Factors Controllable Uncontrollable Your choices & behaviors Uncontrollable Age, race, gender, heredity

6 Controllable Health Risk Behaviors To Avoid Sedentary lifestyle Alcohol & other drug use Sexual activity Behavior that causes injuries Tobacco use Poor eating habits

Lifestyle Diseases Caused partly by unhealthy behaviors & partly by other factors Influenced by choices you make MAKE GOOD CHOICES!!!!

Follow up questions Draw a small picture in your notes next to each one of the components of health. Choose one of the 6 controllable risk behaviors to avoid and give me three reasons why YOU should avoid it.
