F1 – F6 Breeding approach F2 F2 – very small population size/cross (only 400-500 plants) “Ex” – due to undesirable overall seasonal performance Selection is based on an ideotype with traits relevant for Balkan region climate change challenges! The very best (up to 10%) of total crosses tested go to F3 (about 200 crosses). From these 200 crosses, single spikes are selected from a subset of about 20 crosses („top of the top“) for production of DH lines. Our approach to challenge the climate change in Balkan region Creation of novel variability that combines the elite and best from East and West Use of MM at the very beginning of the breeding program (parents evaluation) Produce huge number of crosses (2000 per year) Use a very small population size/cross in F2 (400-500 plants) Perform extremely high selection pressure against undesirable traits Produce DH lines from F2 and/or F3 Creation of varieties with very good to excellent technological quality, which will be more tolerant to pre-harvest sprouting and reduction of test weight due to frequent rains at harvest time FOR THE BALKAN REGION THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION !!!
