Christopher Lee West New Britain Province Papua New Guinea Dami Seeds: An Update New Britain Palm Oil Limited

Oil Palm Breeding at Dami PNG 1. Improvement of base populations 2. Widening of genetic basis 3. Seed Production & Quality Controls

Oil Palm Breeding Objectives - High Yields of Palm Products - High Early Yields - High Extraction rates - Low Vegetative vigour & Trunk Height - Adaptation to local environments. Tolerance to disease, drought & nutrient deficiencies

Short Term Scope: Improving base populations 1. Selection 2. Testing 3. Inter-crossing Selfing Cloning Selection for Seed Production Creation of new seed gardens Deli Dura Avros Pisifera Progeny Testing

Long Term Scope: Introducing long term Variability 1. Selection 2. Testing 3. Inter-crossing Selfing Cloning Selection for Seed Production Creation of new seed gardens Repeat cycle to improve dura/ pisifera parents Nigerian Angola Combined Calabar Yangambi Ekona Combined DuraPisifera Progeny Testing

Breeding trials – Dura Program 7 out of 19 Dura trials in recording 110 hectares of land planted 13,578 palms planted 1,836 palms used for seed production 13.5% Dura palms used in seed production

Breeding trials – Pisifera Program 7 out of 17 trials in recording 84 hectares of land planted 12,371 palms planted 11 palms used for seed production 0.0009 % Pisifera palms used in seed production

Breeding trials – D X P Progeny Testing Testing of candidate parental materials 30 out of 62 progeny testing trials in recording > 1,000 hectares of land planted

Height increment: 69 cm per year Average frond production: 56 per year and will decrease to 28 – 46 per year when the palm reached 5 years and above Bunch production: 11 bunches per year Palm characteristics

Dami Breed to increase & exploit genetic potential $ Present genetic potential at 12-14 tons/ha 8 tons/ha to 9 tons/ha total palm products DM 635.607 x 742.207 = 12 tons/ha For quick returns on investment dollar

Realised yield from Dami planting material $ NBPOL Statistics First Harvesting:25 months after planting First year yield:18-19 tons/ha, 24 tons/ha is common Commercial field:25.6 tons/ha (avg 7 yrs) Current OER: 22.35 % avg (2014) 24.60 % (best mill)

NBPOL FFB Yield $

Yield Improvement Oil yield improvement is 1.6% each year As there is high early yields, farmers would obtain faster return and can replant with better yielding materials despite having taller palms. Early replanting also reduces the impact of diseases such as Ganoderma.

Seed Production Producing D x P hybrid tenera seeds X Dura (thick shell, fertile, low oil) Pisifera (no shell, female sterile) DxP hybrid tenera (thin shell, hybrid vigour, high o/b)

Dami Oil Palm D X P Seeds Stringent selection following ISO 9001 standard Regular inspection of mother/father palms  Quality control  Phytosanitary status of palms Traceability of every seed to its parents. Full pedigree traceability of all commercial seeds

Phytosanitary Management Protecting the interest of customers and importing countries against economic disaster resulting from exotic oil palm diseases

Phytosanitary status One of the first Oil Palm seed producer in the world to have molecular DNA screening All parent palms screened and tested free of important oil palms diseases Continuous process to include new mother/father palms and re-testing of current Parent materials

DNA screening by Queensland University - Australia

Seed Sales Trend

Clonal Seed Garden Trial planted in 2003 (Trial 297) Best dura clone with 70 out of 72 palms selected as dura parent for seed production based on O/B above 24% The offspring has O/B above 30% Trial 331 planted in 2012 with 120 elite dura showed no mantling. Only 2 – 4% fused stigma

Current Availability Currently have semi-clonal progenies that have sufficient seeds for block planting. The parent palms can be cloned and provide sufficient seeds to suit locality. Palms are homogeneous and caters for better nursery culling, harvest efficiency or mechanization and nutrition efficiency.
