Bibliometric Analysis of Process Safety and Environmental Protection Li-Ming Wei1*, Mao-Chih Hsieh1, Wen-Ta Chiu1, Yee-Shuan Lee2 and Yuh-Shan Ho2# 1Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital 2Bibliometric Centre, Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital Introduction Process Safety and Environmental Protection was launched in 1990 as Part B of the Transactions of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and its publications were original contributions to chemical engineering knowledge. It ranked 29 out of 38 in environmental engineering and 87 out of 123 in chemical engineering according to Journal Citation Reports (JCR) with an impact factor of 0.259 in 2001. It is considered a well-recognized journal in both fields of environmental and chemical engineering. A bibliometric analysis was performed to assess the publication pattern concerning in authorship, collaboration, origin countries, citation frequency, and citation indicator during 1990 to 2002 and covering volume 68 (B3) to volume 80 (B4). Methodology The data for this study were based on Science Citation Index (SCI) database on the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) , Philadelphia, PA, U.S.A. The research papers analysis were obtained upon literature search with defined Source Title: Process Safety and Environmental Protection. Results and Discussion The article output did not show a clear trend during the time span from 1990 to 2002. Number of articles published has varied widely in this period (Figure 1). Out of 506 documents, about 80% were dominated by Articles and followed at a significant difference by Editorial Materials with 13.2% (Table 1). A detail list of number of authors, publication output and citation were shown in Figure 2 and it clearly indicated independent and small group were the most often method of collaboration. Publishing countries and its related information of publication ranking were shown in Table 2. The most cited articles of each year in the time span of 1990 to 2002 was selected as shown in Table 3. Figure 1. Annual publication output and CPP from 1991 to 2002 Figure 2. Publication and CPP of various page counts Publication output and citation of various number of authors Table 1. Publication output, citation frequency and CPP of various document types Table 3. Most cited article for each year from 1990 to 2001 Table 2. Publication output, citation frequency, CPP and RCR of top 10 publishing countries P: Publication, C: Times cited, CPP: Citation per publication, RCR: Relative citation rate, PG: Page count, PY: Publish year Conclusion The bibliometric profile of Process Safety and Environmental Protection from 1990 to 2002 showed a low degree of international collaboration and a high percent of independent work. There is possible existence of country bias in publication and the influence of correct citation on citation recording in SCI database. The citation frequency record in SCI will influence the performance of the journal by its impact factors.
