1 Publication Pattern of CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinician Hsin Chen 1 *, Yee-Shuan Lee 2 and Yuh-Shan Ho 1# 1 School of Public Health, Taipei Medical University 2 Bibliometric Centre, Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital Introduction CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinician ranked first not only in 107 journals in the subject category of oncology with impact factor value of 35.933 but also ranked 2 among 5752 journals indexed by ISI (Institute for Scientific Information, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) in 2001. In 1955, Garfield first mentioned the idea of an impact factor that is a fundamental citation-based measure for significance and performance of scientific journals. It is perhaps the most popular bibliometric product used in bibliometrics itself. In this study, the analysis evaluated the documents published in this journal during the time span of 1981 to 2002 covering volume 31, issue 1 to volume 52, issue 6 and was extracted from the online version of Science Citation Index (SCI). A bibliometric analysis was done to assess the quantitative performance of CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinician based on variables including authorship, collaboration, origin countries, citation frequency and citation pattern.Methodology The data for this study were based on Science Citation Index (SCI) database on the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Philadelphia, PA, U.S.A. The research papers analysis were obtained upon literature search with defined Source Title: CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinician. Results and Discussion A total number of 869 papers published in volumes 31 (1981) through 52 (2002) of CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinician by the Science Citation Index into document types Articles (486 items), Bibliography (1 item), Biographical-Item (2 items), Correction (14 items), Addition Correction (8 items), Editorial Material (143 items), Item about an Individual (8 items), Letter (132 items), News Item, (16 items), Note (1 item), Reprint (3 items) and Review (55 items) was taken into account. Quantitative analysis was done to assess the publication pattern concerning in authorship, origin countries, citation frequency and citation indicator. 869 papers were published by 15 countries and USA has dominant by publishing 87% followed by the second ranking with a eighty-fold less. This USA dominance in publication suggested national bias was hidden in the publication patterns. 558 (98%) papers were independent work and only 10 (1.8%) were international collaborated. Conclusion  The bibliometric profile of CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinician from 1981 to 2002 showed a low degree of international collaboration and a high percent of independent work.  The study has found the bias indication of publication in country (USA) and of citation in the research topic (cancer statistics).  54% documents published by single author.
