Science-Policy Interface (SPI) Activities 21st WORKING GROUP C PLENARY MEETING   13th October 2011 Hotel Gromada Airport 32, 17. Stycznia Street, 02-148 Warsaw, Poland The meeting is held under the Polish EU Presidency

Introduction Science-Policy Interface (SPI) ad hoc activity under CIS mandate 2010-12 Objective to support implementation of WFD by linking research needs of relevant end-users (policy makers, water managers, NGOs….) with scientific researchers and outputs. Main goal is to ensure a dynamic interface and to boost usability of available research outcomes (current and future)

Process (1) Series of tasks: Inventory of research and implementation needs from CIS WGs Identify available research and research gaps Improved knowledge transfer and usability of research outputs 2010 Questionnaire on research priorities completed following consultation with WGC (Prague, 04/09) 1st SPI event (DG RTD/ONEMA) – 09/10: review/discuss feedback

Process (2) Develop findings, identify final prioritised list of research needs. Expected outcomes: List of research needs from CIS WGs and Expert Groups Indication of available research outputs List of overall research gaps and priorities Road map for each WG/Expert Group Final delivery date: Autumn 2012

Road map Step 0: Confirmation of SPI correspondent (for each WG/EG) [July 2011] Step 1: Sharing, update and specification of research needs (collection of information) [30 Nov 2011] Step 2: SPI session at SCG (7/8 Nov 2011 + May 2012) Step 3: Prioritisation of research gaps [15 Jan 2012] Step 4: thematic reports and validation as SPI event (Sept 2012)

Step 1 – WGC activity/input Sharing, update and specification of research needs (collection of information) Update of list of research areas/issues – from WGC and 1st SPI event Specification of priority, urgency and importance of research areas/issues (grading) Identify relevant ongoing research and/or outputs Simple questionnaire to complete – by end of November

Questionnaire 1. Review/update list of research areas/issues – partially completed to reflect earlier priorities from WGC and SPI event 2. For each, identify (using scores 1-3): (a). Priority, (b). Urgency and (c). knowledge importance 3. Provide copies of reports, references, links relevant to research outcomes (current and completed) To be emailed and placed on CIRCA Deadline for return: 25th November 2011 to Rob Ward

Other steps Step 2: (a). SPI session at SCG (7/8 Nov 2011) Brainstorming session with DG Env, DG RTD, CIS-SPI and FP6/7 project reps Ecological status, floods, climate change, water scarcity and drought Step 2: (b). SPI session at SCG (May 2012) As above but for groundwater, chemical aspects and agriculture Step 3: Prioritisation of research gaps (15 Jan 2012) Selection of top 3 research gaps for new EU-wide research with brief supporting case(s) including impact on WFD delivery Step 4: thematic reports and validation as SPI event Submission of thematic report drawing together outputs form all steps Submission - June 2012, workshop Sept 2012
