Muscular System Objective: To recognize the functions of the muscular system and describe functions of types of muscle tissue.

Functions of the Muscular System Works with skeletal system to allow body to move Works with skeletal system to give body shape Produces heat Muscle: an organ that can relax and contract, which moves your body. There are two types: Voluntary muscles: muscles you can control (bicep) Involuntary muscles: muscles you cannot control (heart)

Cardiac Muscle Tissue Found only in the heart Helps heart beat and pump blood Movement of cardiac muscle is involuntary (not under your control) . Cardiac Muscle: Found only in the heart Involuntary Can beat independently of input from the brain Striated (striped)

Check For Understanding What organ contains cardiac muscle tissue? The lungs The esophagus The brain The heart

Skeletal Muscle Tissue Attached to your bones to make them move Connected to bones by connective tissue called tendons. Movement of skeletal muscles can be voluntary or involuntary. Contract quickly and tire more easily Look striped or striated Bicep, quadriceps, pectoral

Check For Understanding What is the main function of skeletal muscle tissue? It produces blood cells. It makes your heart beat. It makes your bones move. It digests food.

Smooth Muscle Tissue Found in digestive track (mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines) – helps food go down smoothly Also found in blood vessel walls Involuntary Muscles in the stomach, bladder, blood vessels

Check For Understanding Which organ contains smooth muscle tissue? stomach brain heart liver
