1 Nervous Tissue

2 NERVOUS TISSUE Description:
Nerve cells (neurons) receive and conduct impulses; have long extensions/processes Neuroglia = supporting cells; “nerve glue” Function: Irritability (sense information) Conductivity (transmit information) Location: Brain, spinal cord, nerves

3 NERVOUS TISSUE

4 Muscular Tissue

5 MUSCLE TISSUE General Function: Contract to produce movement

6 MUSCLE TISSUE TERMS Voluntary or Involuntary Striated or Non-striated
(conscious control) or (happens unconsciously) Striated or Non-striated (stripes) or (no stripes) Uni-nucleated or Multi-nucleated (one nucleus) or (many nuclei per each cell)

7 MUSCLE TISSUE 3 types!

8 Skeletal Muscle Description:
Attached to skeleton, pulls on bones or skin Voluntary, striated, multi-nucleated Function: Body movement and facial expression Location: Attached to bones

9 MUSCLE TISSUE Skeletal Muscle

10 Cardiac Muscle Description: Makes up the heart
Involuntary, striated, uni-nucleated Function: Pumps blood through blood vessels Location: Heart

11 MUSCLE TISSUE Cardiac Muscle

12 Smooth Muscle Description: Spindle-shaped cells
Involuntary, non-striated, uni-nucleated Function: Pushes substances through organs Location: Walls of hollow organs (stomach, intestines, bladder)
