1. The Human Muscular System Muscle is an organ that contracts to allow movement of the body. When muscle contracts it becomes shorter. There are more than 600 muscles in the human body.

Two types of muscle control Voluntary muscles – Muscles that are controlled consciously by the person. Ex – Arms, legs and hands. Involuntary muscles – Muscles that are not consciously controlled by the person. Ex – heart, intestines, breathing.

Parts of the Muscular System There are three types of muscle tissue 1. Skeletal muscles – Muscles that move the bones. They are voluntary muscles. Attached to the bones by bands of tissue called tendons.

Parts of the Muscular System 2. Smooth muscles – Muscles that move many of the body’s internal organs. They are involuntary muscles. They contract and relax slowly. They are mostly found in your digestive system.

Parts of the Muscular System 3. Cardiac muscles – Found only in the heart. They are involuntary muscles They contract about 70 times per minute everyday during a person’s life. That’s 36,792,000 times a year.

Functions of the Muscular System Movement! Movement! Movement! Skeletal Muscles move your bones. Smooth Muscles move your food. Cardiac Muscles move your blood.
