Mini-lesson Close Reading/Substituting words Industrialization occurred mainly in the North-east, where it changed the very structure of society. In the South, a boom in cotton production helped deepen the region’s commitment to slavery. The two parts of the country developed in different ways—a fact that increasingly complicated politics in the United States. One way to make sure you understand what you read is to substitute words to make sure you understand what the text says. Then take a note in your own words rather than copying straight from the text.

Student Work Compare the economic, social, and cultural differences in the South, North, and West of the United states during the early 1800s/antebellum period. Economics Social Cultural North South West Be sure to talk about educational reform under the social heading.
