2  People wanted to improve themselves & society  Influence of Jackson (people control)  2 nd Great Awakening  Christian movement 1790s-1830s  Revivalism occurred nationwide  1800- 1 in 15 belonged to a church  1850- 1 in 6 belonged to a church  African American Church  South- slaves heard same sermons & hymns as their owners  North- formed their own churches  Political, social, and cultural centers

3  1820s- abolition movement had taken hold in U.S.  William Lloyd Garrison  Radical white abolitionist  The Liberator- Garrison’s newspaper that argued for immediate emancipation  Frederick Douglas  Escaped from slavery and became highly educated  Wanted abolition w/out violence  North Star- news paper that guided slaves to freedom  Life under Slavery  18 th century- slaves mostly male  1830s- male & female #s were equal  Worked as servants, in the fields, or farm hands  Subject to deprivation and violence

4  Turner’s Rebellion  Virginia 1831  Nat Turner rallied more than 50 followers and attacked four plantations  Killed 60 white people  Turner & many of his group were captured & executed  Slave Owners Oppose Abolition  Turner’s Rebellion frightened/angered slave owners  Restricted slaves to prevent rebellions  Used Bible to justify slavery

5  Early 19 th century women urged for reforms  Inspired by 2 nd Great Awakening  Wanted education, abolition, voting rights, & temperance (no alcohol)  Women’s Rights  Seneca Falls Convention 1840  Seneca Falls, NY  300 women  Organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Lucretia Mott
