Curriculum Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Play Based Curriculum Child- centered and Child-led

7 Areas of learning, 3 of them Prime and 4 of them Specific

Prime Areas Personal Social and Emotional Development (PSED) Communication and Language (CL) Physical Development (PD)

Specific Areas Literacy (L) Mathematics (M) Understanding the World (UW) Expressive Art and Design (EAD)

Formal/ Direct Teaching How do children learn? Formal/ Direct Teaching

Independent learning through Continuous Provision

Unplanned/ Spontaneous teaching and learning

Lessons from my Black and White Shoes!

What can we do with that interest? New words e.g. squeak, Shoes (L) Colours (EAD) Find things around the classroom that are black or white. Lets Count them. What if we take away the white ones, how many are left? (M)

We can talk about colours We can talk about colours. Which ones do they like or dislike and why (PSED, CL) We can draw or paint shoes like mine (EAD) We can practice Writing the letters that form the colours(L)

We could also read the poem of the Old woman who lived in a shoe We could also read the poem of the Old woman who lived in a shoe. Even better, we can make up a story about an old woman who lived in a shoe. Challenge their imagination (L, CL, UW, EAD).

Our Teaching, must therefore be very flexible to accommodate these unplanned opportunities. Play is a child’s work! The EYFS is play based. Children must feel like they are playing to learn.

OAP- Cycle Teachers OBSERVE children in their play, ASSESS it and then PLAN learning and teaching according to the Uniqueness of each child.

Every child is unique in terms of their: Interests level of understanding and Development, life experiences and background style of learning etc.

We know we have done our job when: Your child comes home at the end of a school day and you ask them …….What did you do in school today? Answer…….I played!

Thank you for Listening!
