World War II Lesson 1

Vocabulary to Know Imperialism - The act of taking over other countries to gain power and natural resources Neutral - not picking a side and staying out of war opportunity cost - The costs that go along with a decision.

Global Depression The U.S. was not the only place where there was high unemployment! European and Asian countries were going through really bad times too!

Germany and the Depression Germany was even more depressed than the United States because they had to pay for all of the damages of World War I. Germany had to pay ALL THE ALLIED POWER COUNTRIES: U.S., FRANCE, GREAT BRITAIN, and RUSSIA. many Germans were unemployed. Germany was still rebuilding from the war!

Adolf Hitler IN 1932, WHEN GERMANY WAS REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS, THEY LOOKED TOWARDS A NEW LEADER FOR HOPE. Adolf Hitler told the Germans that they deserved better, more jobs, more money, and more land! He was a member and the leader of the Nazi Party He was elected the German Chancellor in 1932.

Adolf Hitler HITLER WAS POPULAR BECAUSE HE PROMISED THE GERMANS A BETTER LIFE. Hitler blamed the Socialists and the Jews for all of Germany’s problems. How do you think a lot Germans felt about the Jews and Socialists?

Nazi Germany German propaganda made the Germans look strong. German propaganda made the Jews and the socialists look like thieves. German propaganda made the Germans think they deserve more! Hitler was an imperialist.

Nazi Imperialism Hitler said that Germany should invade other countries so Germany can have more land and natural resources. Germany took over Austria-Hungary, and invaded Czechoslovakia and Poland!

Europe Great Britain, France, New Zealand, and Australia (allied Powers) WERE FORCED TO DECLARE WAR ON GERMANY on September 3, 1939! Why would the allied powers declare war on Germany? The United States stayed neutral. World War II started in Europe on September 3, 1939.

JAPAN Japan like Germany was in the middle of a huge depression Unemployment was out of control! The emperor of Japan, Hirohito, decided to use imperialism to help Japan get out of the great depression.

JAPANESE IMPERIALISM JAPAN DECIDED TO INVADE PARTS OF CHINA AND TRY TO GET MORE NATURAL RESOURCES,TO RAISE MORALE (spirits).
