6 Problems in Europe Due to Great Depression, dictators were able to gain power in European nations Under Hitler, Germany began to remilitarize Violated the Treaty of Versailles Not supposed to have an army of more than 100,000 European countries (Britain and France) wanted to avoid war so they didn’t say anything League of Nations- useless because the US wasn’t involved, couldn’t stop Hitler Germany became more aggressive- why?

8 Appeasement Hitler annexed Austria, then the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia (without asking) Alarmed other countries- European leaders met with Hitler They hoped Germany would be satisfied and stop taking land Allies used policy of appeasement Appeasement –giving in to the demands of a hostile party, in the hopes of preventing a larger conflict Called Munich Agreement- Germany *promises* to stop taking land, Europe lets him keep what he had already taken

Germany invades Poland- start of WWII 6 months later, Germany took the rest of Czechoslovakia- then wanted Poland England and France threatened war if Germany invaded Poland Germany signed non-aggression pact with Soviet Union Agreed that Germany and USSR would split Poland and Germany wouldn’t invade USSR Germany invaded Poland on September 1, WWII starts
