Metaphor Direct comparison of two unalike objects

Personification Giving human characteristics to something non-human

Simile Comparison using “like” or “as”

Onomatopoeia Words that make sounds

Imagery Painting pictures with words

Hyperbole Extended exaggeration

Paradox Contradiction in terms

Irony The opposite of what you might expect

Allusion A reference to another work of literature. A Biblical allusion is a reference to the Bible.

Symbolism An object or concept represents something else.

Foreshadowing A hint of what is to come

Flashback The story steps back in time to tell something that occurred before the action currently taking place in the story.
