What is Matter? Objective What are we doing? Today we will describe matter and analyze it’s parts. How will we do it? By comparing and contrasting physical and chemical properties of matter and sorting examples of both. Activity

Vocabulary anything that has mass and takes up space. Term Definition Picture Matter  anything that has mass and takes up space.   Chemistry study of the properties and changes of matter. Substance a single kind of matter that has the same properties. Physical Change a change in the size or state of matter. Chemical Change when the molecules of matter change.

Think, Pair, Share: Compare and contrast both pictures with a shoulder partner.

There are two kinds of properties that every form of matter has: Physical Properties State Color Size Hardness Odor Solubility Density Melting Point Boiling Point Chemical Properties Ability to Rust Flammability (Fire) Combustibility (Explosive) Reactivity with vinegar Decomposition rate Chopped Wood

Chopped Wood PHYSICAL CHEMICAL A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance. A characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances. A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance. A characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances.

Cut out the examples and paste them under the correct Property of Matter: Physical or Chemical.

Helpful Definitions: Corrosion- a reaction that occurs with metal. Tarnish- when a substance becomes dim or discolored. Ductility- a substance that is easily molded or shaped. pH- whether a substance is acidic or basic. Density- how close together the molecules of a substance are or how much mass it has in a given space. Viscosity- how slowly a liquid substance flows. Luster- a substance’s shininess. Radioactivity- energy that is given off when the molecules of a substance break apart. Malleability- a substance that can be reshaped when hammered or rolled under pressure. Melting Point- the temperature that a solid becomes a liquid. Boiling Point- the temperature that a liquid becomes a gas. Odor- smell Forms Rust- red or orange color that happens when a substance reacts with air or moisture.
