1 Introduction to Chemistry
Chemistry - the science of matter; the branch of the natural sciences dealing with the composition of substances and their properties and reactions Matter - anything that takes up space and has mass There are different kinds of matter. Each different kind of matter has different properties

2 Physical Property of Matter: a characteristic or description of a substance that can be used to identify it. Examples: State of matter (liquid, gas, solid) Hardness Malleability - (how easy to bend) Ductility - (how easy to stretch) Melting/Boiling Point Crystal Form Solubility in Water Viscosity Density

3 Chemical Property of Matter: a characteristic or behavior that occurs when one substance interacts with another to create a new substance Examples: Combustibility/Flammability Reaction with acids
