1 Physical and Chemical Properties

2 Vocabulary Physical Property Viscosity Conductivity Physical change
Malleability Melting point Boiling point Flammability Chemical change Reactivity

3 Physical Properties Physical Properties- describes the appearance of the substance or something that can be measured Ex. color, odor, density, melting point, boiling point and hardness Viscosity- resistance of a liquid to flowing (molasses or lava) Conductivity- ability to allow heat to flow Malleability- ability to hammered without breaking

4 Chemical Properties Chemical Properties- describe the way a substance reacts to form other substances Examples Flammability- burns in presence of oxygen Reactivity- how easily it forms compounds with other substances Rusting, fermentation

5 Physical Changes Physical Changes- change the appearance of the substance but it does not become something new. Changes in state during heating or cooling such as melting or freezing Changes in the size or shape such as cutting a piece of metal into several pieces

6 Chemical Changes Also known as a chemical reaction
Occurs when a substance reacts and forms one or more new substances Ex. Wood burns into ash, cooking, growing, and fireworks

7 Evidence for Chemical Changes
Change in color (when you didn’t add that color) Change in temperature (when you didn’t add or take away heat) Production of a gas (bubbles) or a solid (precipitate)
