Hook, Bridge, Controlling Idea Conyers Middle School ELA

The hook is the very first sentence of the introductory paragraph. What is a hook? The hook is the very first sentence of the introductory paragraph. The hook grabs the reader’s attention.

What are the types of hooks? A generalization: A common misconception Fact of statistic Anecdote Quote

What is the bridge? The bridge contains sentences that help the writer transition (move) from the hook to the controlling idea.

What’s included in the bridge? Specific details, explanations, background knowledge, or elaborations that relate to the hook.

What is a controlling idea? Look at your Cornell notes from Monday. Any volunteers?
