TOM NEWBY SCHOOL BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME PRESENTATION 2013

To introduce a revised approach to behaviour management that includes: Replacing the demerit system with a revised system based on Kudos. Integrating the homework monitoring in the Kudo system. Separating bullying from general behaviour management.

Traditionally, demerits are issued for misconduct. Guidelines for issuing demerits are vague. Issuing of demerits is subjective. Good conduct is overshadowed by misconduct. The system is propelled by negative elements.

Demerits are accrued and action taken at specified accumulation points. At TNS two different behaviour management systems exist: Foundation Phase and Intersen Phase.

Why change? Demerits are given. This can be interpreted as a reward. Without clear guidelines, demerits are issued inconsistently from day to day and teacher to teacher. Disciplinary action is not tailored to suit the offence or develop more suitable behaviour patterns – one consequence fits all.

Detention is the only option available for cumulative misconduct. Not all children are able to attend detention after hours. Detention is not structured to rehabilitate or develop acceptable behaviour patterns. Detention is a deferred consequence: sometimes as long as 5 months between first and last misconduct. Why change?

Different systems are implemented in the Junior and Senior School. Children have to acclimatize to a new system in Grade 4. A demerit is not a punishment – it is a written entry with no immediate consequence. Violent behaviour and misconduct are placed in the same category and misdemeanours result in the same consequence. Why change?

What are the Changes? Violent behaviour and bullying will be prioritised through a more support structured programme so that behaviour can be tracked, recorded and analysed to inform action taken by the school and parents.

What are the Changes? Instead of issuing a demerit, misconduct will be met with the loss of a behaviour token called a KUDO.

What are the Changes? Dishonesty in Class or Assessment Tasks is dealt with as a unique form of misconduct and action is dependant on the degree of dishonesty.

What are the Changes? Tracking Sheets that are currently only used in the Senior School will be used in the Junior School as well.

Advantages of Changing Loss of KUDOs is linked to levels of authority in which specified suitable action is clearly outlined. As action taken becomes more serious, the level of authority increases.

Advantages of Changing Guidelines for loss of KUDOs is clearly stated in the Code of Conduct to improve consistency of implementation.

Advantages of Changing The KUDO system can be used from Grade 1 to Grade 7.

Advantages of Changing The current Homework Programme can be integrated into the KUDO system to simplify the Behaviour Management Programme.

Advantages of Changing Options other than afternoon retention are available as choices for punitive action. Afternoon retention takes the form of a Community Service – in all likelihood maintenance of a vegetable garden whose produce can be donated to a charity organisation.

Advantages of Changing A reward system is linked to the KUDO system in order to promote retaining KUDOs. This means that the system is led by positivity rather than negativity.

What is the KUDO system? Each learner is awarded a number of KUDOs at the start of each year. For 2013 the number is 50. The learners need to keep as many KUDOs as they can by behaving in accordance with the Code of Conduct. The number of retained KUDOs at the end of each term determines the quality of reward issued. When KUDOs are lost, corrective action is taken according to set guidelines.

How many KUDOs can be lost? Manners Learners should refrain from chewing gum during school hours or at school functions. (K1) Learners should assemble in an orderly fashion when entering the school hall for activities and conduct themselves with decorum during formal activities in the school hall. (K1) Learners are encouraged to leave items of value at home, except by special arrangement with the Principal or Deputy Principal. (K1) Learners using public transport should behave in accordance with instructions from the driver or person officially in charge. (K1, 2,3) Learners should use toilet facilities properly and notify the Administration Office if there are insufficient supplies or facilities are not working properly. (K1)
