Start of American Expansionism Monroe Doctrine: establishes Latin America as US sphere of influence, European nations not allowed Sphere of influence: a country or area in which another country has the power to affect developments, without formal governing authority. Purchase of Alaska: from Russia in 1867 Does not become a state until 1959.
