Aim: Why were Americans’ divided over the women’s suffrage movement?

Discuss… What is gender? What is an example of gender roles? How do you know/hear about gender roles?

Do people still believe in the different “spheres” today? Women’s sphere: idea that defined separate “spheres” or spaces for women and men. This idea prevented women from gaining equal rights and treatment. The women stay at home caring for the family and the house and awaiting anxiously for the husband The men go to work and then come home to a loving wife Do people still believe in the different “spheres” today?

The women’s suffrage movement Women’s suffrage movement: movement seeking to gain the right to vote for women. Suffragist—person who advocates granting the right to vote to women. Anti-suffragist—person who is against giving women the right to vote.
