Tronc commun Bac L/ES/S

3 The exam T L You will randomly pick 1 of the 4 notions:
Myths and heroes Places and forms of power The idea of progress Spaces and exchanges You will have 10 minutes to get ready to present the notion, find an essay question to talk about 3-4 documents you have studied for 10 minutes. Then you will have to answer questions for 10 minutes You can have access to your documents (with no notes on them)

4 Prepare a plan in advance
For each of the 4 notions: (1 worksheet by notion) Find a definition (in a dictionary)/ explain what the notion means for you, in which context will you develop it? (write it down on a separate worksheet for each of the 4 notions) Find 3-4 documents from the lessons that you would like to talk about. Write their titles / author / page number on the corresponding worksheet.

5 Notion: The idea of progress.
Example: Notion: The idea of progress. Definition: a movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage. Growth or development; continuous improvement. (selected from dictionary.com) For me, progress involves an effort to change an unfair situation, to have more equality…

6 Documents The documents I have chosen:
- desperate housewives opening credits (paintings) The 2 texts from the bac 2014: Erin Kaye, Closer to home and The NY Times August 10/2012 « The punch press operator » book p48 So my key ideas will be: men/women stereotypes, men and women at home and at work / + the role of machines in the evolution of these roles and stereotypes

7 The Essay question / Guideline:
Find an essay question or guideline that will help you make a link between the documents and the notion. Ex: To what extent/how have the stereotypical roles of men and women evolved, what were the key factors of progress in the representation of men and women in our society?

8 Develop / Demonstrate Find 2/3 titles for the 2/3 parts of your demonstration Write 5 key words next to the documents you will mention in each part of your demonstration. Write a conclusion to answer your essay question (recap): we have shown that… It appears that…

9 Ex: plan for demonstration
Part 1: The ancestral roles of men and women: stereotypical representations Paintings: motherhood / chores / private sphere for women. Original sin, temptation. Text 1: running the house (woman) / support the family (man) Text 2: women careers, ambition, stay at home dad Part 2: The role of machines (technical progress) in allowing more equality between the genders at home and at work ( can be separated into 2 parts) - Paintings: consumer society, easier chores, less time spent at home, need more money to buy more, 2 incomes -Punch press operator: Machines: more powerful that men, women can do rough tasks as well, manpower replaced by mechanical power. Industrialization.

10 Conclude We have seen that… It clearly appears that…
Social progress is linked to technical progress. Changes in society like the 2WWars or consumer society also changed the traditional roles of men and women. Ouverture: de nos jours / dans l’actualité / dans d’autres pays… Today, however, women haven’t reached parity yet (their salary is still inferior, they need to claim what is theirs…)
