Bell Work! In exactly SEVEN words, write a complete sentence that summarizes what you learned on Monday and Tuesday. Write this GREAT sentence at the top.
Aim: How to separate mixtures
Monday, September 24, 2012 How does separating a mixture help scientists study it? (Why can’t it just be left alone to determine what it contains???)

Presentation transcript:

Sept 17 / 18 Act A6 Identifying Liquids LEARNING TARGET: I can investigate and determine different liquids in a specific mixture. CHALLENGE Q What are the liquids in the mixture? VOCAB chemical properties physical properties Miscible toxic observation how they react how they "appear" poison "mixable" To see or notice

Miscible (water or alcohol) Contains Water Corrosive Toxic Flammable DISCUSSION Review and define each of the following terms. Predict how to test each (if testable). Appearance Miscible (water or alcohol) Contains Water Corrosive Toxic Flammable Which of the liquids do you think will be flammable? Why do you think this? Demo to follow

Appearance – State of matter (S,L,G); transparency; thickness DISCUSSION (cont) Appearance – State of matter (S,L,G); transparency; thickness Miscible (water or alcohol) – Does it mix? Or remain a separate layer? Contains Water – blue Cobalt Chloride strip will turn pink if substance contains water

Flammable – if flammable, liquid will ignite or spark DISCUSSION (cont) Corrosive (liquids) – Measuring pH levels; Yes ‘corrosive’ if pH is highly acidic (less than 3) OR highly basic (more than 11) Toxic – harmful to health of organisms; adding potassium thiocyanate to liquid, if turns RED, liquid is toxic Flammable – if flammable, liquid will ignite or spark

DEMO: Predict: Which of the liquids, (A - clear or B - orange) will be flammable? Why?

ONLY ONE CAP OFF A BOTTLE AT ONE TIME and DROP THROUGH THE AIR ! PROCEDURE AND DATA MATERIALS: PROCEDURE: Read on pg. A-22-24, and summarize DATA: WS 6.1 Properties of Separated Liquids update WS 5.1 with new data

vials ethanol vials ethanol BLUE test strip

add TAN test strip potassium… dropper bottle When finished: Use table 2 on pg A-25 to identify the liquids in the mixture

ANALYZE RESULTS BELOW TO IDENTIFY LIQUID A and LIQUID B

ANALYSIS - Separate Sheet of paper – Turn in Independently answer Q 1 on pg. A-24 Use: WS 6.1 Properties of Separated Liquids & Table 2 on pg. A-25 & Claim-Evidence-Reasoning Make a Claim (A statement or conclusion that answers the original question/problem) Giving 3 pieces of Supporting Evidence (Scientific data that supports the claim) Explain Your Reasoning (A justification that connects the evidence to the claim)

ANALYSIS Discuss and answer Q 2 & 3 on pg. A-24 ANS CHALLENGE Q What are the liquids in the mixture? A: the mixture's liquids are: A = mineral oil B = iron nitrate HOMEWORK Finish Analysis Questions (Use SEPUP website to find questions if needed)
