1 Tuesday, October 3, 2017 Warm-Up: Explain density in your own words. What does it mean to be “more dense” than another object? Learning Target: I can conduct tests to identify the solids in the mixture. Success Criteria: I will be successful when I can accurately explain the physical properties (density, etc.) of the solids. Plan for Today 1. Vocabulary 2. Density Review/Formulas 3. Identifying the Solids 4. Analysis Questions/Density Practice Problems

2 Vocabulary Conductivity: allows electricity to flow Density: how much “stuff” in a certain “space”; measured in g/cm₃ or g/mL Reactivity: chemical interaction happens; change in color, smell, heat

3 WHAT IS THE FORMULA FOR DENSITY?

4 m = ? v = ?

5 What are the solids in the mixture?
CHALLENGE QUESTION: What are the solids in the mixture?

6 This demonstrates ______________________.
Prediction: “IF I place the solids in a cup of water, THEN they will sink (or float) BECAUSE ____________________________________.” This demonstrates ______________________. density (compared to water)

7 PROCEDURE and DATA: Materials: Procedure: A-26-31 Data: WS 7.1
* and update WS 5.1! RED BLACK LARGE METAL SMALL METAL

8 SLIDE metal into vial to avoid splashing!

9 SLIDE metal into vial to avoid splashing!
ANALYSIS: A-30 Qs 1, 2, 4, & 5!

10 ANALYZE RESULTS BELOW TO IDENTIFY THE FOUR SOLIDS

11 When done: CLEAN-UP your table, sink, and return ALL materials. Finish the data chart! Answer Questions #1, 2, 4, & 5 on page A 30 in your Science Notebook in Complete Sentences! Still more time? Finish your Simply Symbols Worksheet!

12 Update WS 5.1 with any names and Hazards (yes or no)!
ANALYSIS: A30 Question 1 a. Tests results should be same as Table 2 b. red = HDPE plastic (conduct - , CuCl2 - , floats in H2O) black = HDPE plastic (conduct - , CuCl2 - , floats in H2O) large metal = not enough data for name yet small metal = not enough data for name yet Question 4 Update WS 5.1 with any names and Hazards (yes or no)!

13 What are the solids in the mixture?
REFLECTION: What are the solids in the mixture? A: Solids in mixture are: red = black = large metal = small metal = HDPE plastic HDPE plastic not enough info not enough info HOMEWORK: Finish the Density Problems!
