Properties and Changes of Matter

A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Characteristic you can observe without changing or trying to change the composition of the substance. You can detect many of these properties with your senses. EX: how it looks, smells, sounds, or tastes

A. Physical Properties Physical Properties States of matter Solid, liquid or gas EX: Water Solid – ice Liquid – water Gas – water particles in air

A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Dependent Properties Mass – how much matter it contains Volume – amount of space it occupies Weight – mass x gravity

A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Independent Properties Density – amount of mass in a given volume D=m/v Solubility – number of grams of something that will dissolve in another at a certain temperature.

A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Independent Properties Melting/boiling points The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid – melting point. The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas – boiling point.

A. Physical Properties Physical Properties Size Independent Properties State of matter Color Ability to attract a magnet Magnetic – pulls iron towards itself. Some materials can be made into magnets.

B. Chemical Properties A chemical property is a characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance. Ability of a substance to undergo a change that alters its identity. Match, food baking
