1 Physical Properties Chapter 7, Lesson 2

2 Physical Properties of Matter
Property Characteristics used to describe something The properties of different types of matter are determined by the arrangement of its atoms Physical property Characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing the identity of the matter

3 Physical properties States of matter Mass Volume melting point
boiling point Density Conductivity Solubility Is there some way that these physical properties can be organized?

4 Physical Properties Size-Dependent Properties – depends on the size or amount of matter Size-Independent Properties – do NOT depend on the amount of matter Volume Mass melting point boiling point Density Conductivity Solubility Magnetism State of matter

5 Size-dependent Properties
MASS – the amount of matter in an object Size-dependent because its value depends on the size of the sample Different than weight- Weight – the pull of gravity on an object Weight changes by location but mass does not VOLUME – the amount of space an object takes up What is a common unit for volume? RC-p.243 Typical unit is mL Cm3 (cubic cm) – another NOT mentioned in book

6 True or False: The small beaker of water will boil first because its boiling point is lower than the larger beaker of water.

7 False! The small beaker of water WILL boil first but it is because there is LESS water in the container and so it will take less time for the water to reach 100o C (at sea level). “Boiling Point” is a “size-independent property” which means it NEVER CHANGES (in the same conditions)

8 Which copper wire will have a higher degree of electrical conductivity?

9 Answer: They are ALL copper wires which means they will all conduct electricity equally well.

10 Size-Independent Properties (We will call these “characteristic properties”)
BOILING POINT – the temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas MELTING POINT – the temperature at which a solid become a liquid DENSITY –mass per unit volume of a substance

11 More Size-independent (“Characteristic”) Properties
Conductivity Solubility The ability of matter to “carry along” something “What are 2 types of conductivity?” RC-p.244 Electrical Conductivity –the ability to carry along an electrical current Thermal Conductivity – ability of a material to carry along heat (thermal energy) The ability of one substance to dissolve in another

12 Assignment: Write the definitions of the following words
Assignment: Write the definitions of the following words. For words with (*) indicate if it is size-dependent or size-independent Property Physical property Size-dependent property Size-independent property *Melting point *Boiling point *Density *Conductivity *Solubility Don’t forget: LESSON 1&2 CONTENT QUIZ ON WED., 11/16!
