Choi Wai Kit (Gavin) St. Margaret’s Girls’ College, Hong Kong Using Office 365 Cloud Platform to Improve Distant Learning in Mainstream Curriculum Choi Wai Kit (Gavin) St. Margaret’s Girls’ College, Hong Kong

Basic Information Name: Choi Wai Kit (Gavin) School Name: St. Margaret’s Girls’ College, Hong Kong Description of School: A Secondary Girls School under the Direct Subsidy Scheme Student Characteristic: Multi-culture, Passive and Low Motivation School Website: http://www.smgchk.edu.hk Subject Area: ICT Age / Grade Level: Secondary 5 Learning Objectives: Improve Project-based learning experience and achieve Anytime Anywhere Learning

Project Description Student grouped into 4 Project duration: 3 weeks Project focus: Think of a way that technology can help our new school become greener environment Tools used: Office 365 Excel Survey Lync Online SharePoint Online

Project Description (Cont’d) Aim: Engage students with 21th century learning skills having hand in technology by applying write application at right time. Guided by teacher to help students discuss issues in depth and to convey their ideas clearly and concisely

Project learning To develop generic skills for life long learning Critical Thinking Skills Communication Skills Collaboration Skills Information Technology Skills Problem-Solving Skills Problem-based learning (PBL) approach Instruction and criteria are provided by the teacher. Developing knowledge through self-discovery by tackling real-life problems. It can bring the students together to develop their collective skills at acquiring, communication, and integrating information. Feedback will be given and students have chance to revise their work.

Knowledge construction Through media research and drawing mind-map Analysis  Knowledge consolidation  Integration & Collaboration  Deepened understanding Analysis tools: online questionnaire Logical training: charts and data measurements Students will construct their knowledge by having hands on experience, conducting surveys and discussion on NewsFeed in SharePoint Online & Lync Online. They will have challenges to achieve in different subject areas and will be sharing and supporting each other groups to attain them.

Extended Learning Beyond the Classroom Due to limited time for students to discuss and finish the project during the lesson. IT is an effective tool to help the them finish their tasks at anytime and anywhere. Once they have a computers or mobile devices which can connect to internet, they can do the project or communicate together. Students need analyse the data after people answered the questionnaire. Students will be working out of the school bounds to have complete knowledge building and will be able to compare and question differences and try to find out solutions with the help of peers sitting across boarders.

Extended Learning Beyond the Classroom (Cont’d) Students will innovate new ideas together in group and will plan on disseminating this new innovation and responsible organizations working for sustainable development. Through the above processes, students equipped problem solving skills for their study even though benefit their future life.

Collaboration Mind-maps, background research Students will be sharing and give comment with their findings across their groupmates on SharePoint Online & Lync Online They will compare each other research to prepare their action plan by analyzing and interpreting the research result using Lync and SharePoint as a communication tools. Subject teachers supporting each group in different subject areas of the learning activity will coordinate and decide on learning outcomes in each activity of the project.

Collaboration (Cont’d) Online questionnaire Peer-Evaluation During the presentation session, every student of a group takes turn to present Q&A Session Message reinforcement

Cutting Edge Use of Technology for Learning Technology is a tool to help them to do the project at anytime and anywhere. Brainstorming is a creative process that can be undertaken individually but is mainly used in a group setting It is a powerful way to generate, share and maximize new ideas. Without using Lync Online, students cannot communicate across boarders. Subject-wise tabs will be made to keep data under precise subject and will be shared by OneDrive Online presentations and virtual discussions on data will be done with the help of SharePoint and Office 365 Technology allows students to record their learning progress for easy access and continuous reflection. Teachers can also monitor their progress without disturbance.

Educator as Innovator and Change Agent Mass media, online information, mobile phone, personal computers, online reading library Change students learn from passive learner to active learner. They can seek information outside the textbooks and consolidate and build up their knowledge. As teachers our job will be to ensure maximum learning outcomes of the students by continually taking assessments and giving feedbacks to them. During the whole process students will be able to do, review, learn & apply their own and each others work. The role of teacher acts as a facilitator and serves as a cognitive coach. Teacher guides students’ learning and supports the learning process during lesson or after school. It just works like “Flipped Classroom”.

Project outcomes Students can construct their knowledge through collaborate, edit or comment on their project work Learning attitude of students become proactive and higher motivation. Students’ feedback: Office 365 Cloud Platform is an interactive software that they can do the project together at a same time. Any device which can access internet can access Office 365 Cloud Platform to do their project They no need to purchase the software for their learning They can learn from interactive practice Learning attitude become proactive and higher motivation.

Future plan Teachers can put all the subject notes onto OneDrive to share with students Students can well use of “OneNote” as a note-taking tool on e-learning. Well use of SharePoint Online to construct a learning platform for different subjects used in e-learning.
