1 PD Goals Program Overview December, 2012
INVENTORcloud PD Goals Program Overview December, 2012

2 Professional Development Goals
Over these two days, we want to achieve the following goals: Develop an understanding of Problem-Based learning and understand the differences and similarities between problem-based and project-based learning; Develop a comfort level using AST’s INVENTORcloud program and its TEAM UP site by modeling lessons and providing opportunities to work through articles, videos, activities, and projects that are part of the actual curriculum; Develop an understanding of the role of teacher as facilitator utilizing web resources within AST’s private cloud employing 21st Century teaching and learning skills to guide individual and team-based learning; Inspire creativity and a curiosity in teachers that will be passed to students.

3 Problem-based Learning is . . .
the use of a PROBLEM Statement that guides learning AND any activities resulting from the PROBLEM statement that explore the topic In Problem-based learning, individuals and teams are responsible to identify what is needed to solve the problem AND identify sources of information and other resources.

4 Problem-based Learning
Students in small groups investigate and analyze problems/scenarios. They identify: Facts Problems (overall and other specific- e.g. Team Rescue) Ideas (brainstorming) What they have to learn (discover in order to test hypothesis, ideas, solutions

5 Problem-based Learning
Teachers are facilitators who use open-ended questions --- “What do we need to know more about?” “What evidence did you find to support your position?” The role of the instructor is to facilitate learning by supporting, guiding, and monitoring the learning process. The teacher builds students' confidence to take on the problem and encourages students, while stretching their understanding by making them think and expand their knowledge and understanding.

6 Project-based Learning
 is the use of in-depth and rigorous classroom projects to facilitate learning and assess student competence emphasizes learning activities that are long-term, interdisciplinary, and student-centered requires students to organize their own work and manage their own time  requires inquiry to learn and/or create something new

7 Project-based Learning
Well-designed projects ask students to: Tackle real problems and issues that have importance to people beyond the classroom. Work on projects that result in solutions to problems of real importance to students and adults in the community. Actively engage in their learning and make important choices during the project. 8 Program Overview Developed by AST 2 based on a course offered at Miami, OH University. Further developed and designed with a wide variety of resources appropriate for high school students; Designed to teach crucial higher level 21st Century skills: the ability to think creatively and critically; the ability to innovate; the ability to identify, research, and solve problems; the ability to communicate effectively; the ability to work successfully as members of a team;

9 Program Overview INVENTORcloud allows students to have in-classroom, real-life interaction with analytical, research, design, and manufacturing equipment by remotely accessing rapid prototyping equipment; INVENTORcloud supports STEM, science, math, social studies, liberal arts, and fine/performing arts disciplines in 18-week courses aligned with Common Core State Standards, National Technology Standards, Ohio Academic Content Standards, Ohio Technology Standards, and Ohio Career-Tech Standards. INVENTORcloud’s technology enables collaboration, research, co-creation, and information sharing among geographically distributed groups in virtual and mixed reality environments.

10 Program Overview INVENTORcloud
- Attracts students with a broad array of interests for a unique multi-disciplinary learning experience; - Integrates cutting-edge visualization and communication tools with remote access to scientific and manufacturing equipment to develop, create, test, and iterate prototypes (solutions); - Partners with educational service centers, post-secondary institutions, and industry to provide students with access to equipment and experts; - Removes barriers to learning often brought about by economics, access, and location.

11 Program Overview INVENTORcloud closes the gap- connects the disconnect- that exists between industry and educational institutions. INVENTORcloud allows students to excel in a hands-on, real-world environment that provides them the opportunity to BUILD, EVALUATE, and REFINE solutions to problems we face today. We apply what we learn; we investigate; we work in teams; we collaborate with peers across the state and the country; we identify and solve problems; we create and innovate; we write about and then build our solutions; we have FUN learning to be successful in the 21st Century.
