Career Technical Education Act of 2016 Senate… Stalled…. Career Technical Education Act of 2016

Definitions: Career Pathways The term ‘‘career pathway’’ means a combination of rigorous and high quality education, training, and other services that— (A) Aligns with the skill needs of industries in the economy of the state or regional economy involved; (B) Prepares an individual to be successful in any full range of secondary or postsecondary education options, including registered apprenticeships;

Definitions: Career Pathways (cont.) (C) Includes counseling to support an individual in achieving the individual’s education and career goals; (D) Includes, as appropriate, education offered concurrently with and in the same context as workforce preparation activities and training for a specific occupation or occupational cluster;

Definitions: Career Pathways (cont.) (E) Organizes education, training, and other services to meet the particular needs of an individual in a manner that accelerates the educational and career advancement of the individual to the extent practicable; (F) Enables an individual to attain a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and at least 1 recognized postsecondary credential; and (G) Helps an individual enter or advance within a specific occupation or occupational cluster

Definitions: Career Pathways (cont.) Challenge: Many ways to define Career Pathways… Small groups of occupations within an industry sector A sequence of steps by which a worker can progress to more demanding, higher-paying jobs.

Definitions: Recognized Postsecondary credential credential consisting of an industry- recognized certificate or certification, certificate of completion of an apprenticeship, license recognized by the state involved or Federal Government, associate or baccalaureate degree.

Definitions: Work-Based Learning Sustained interactions with industry or community professionals in real workplace settings, to the extent practicable, or simulated environments at an educational institution that fosters in-depth, first- hand engagement with the tasks required of a given career field, that are aligned to curriculum and instruction.

Definitions: Groups added Youth who have aged out of the foster care system Homeless individuals Youth with a parent who is an active-duty member of the Armed Forces Replace ‘individuals with limited English proficiency” with English learners

Definitions: CTE Concentrator At the secondary level, a student who has… Completed 3 or more CTE courses Or Completed at least 2 courses in a single CTE program or program of study
