Learning goals We are learning to identify ionic compounds. We are learning to name ionic compounds. We are learning to write chemical formulas for ionic compounds.

Recall An ionic bond occurs between a metal and a non-metal. The metals lose electrons to become cations. The non-metals gain electrons to become anions. The resulting compound is held together electrostatically. The overall charge of an ionic compound is zero.
