Presentation on theme: "Naming ionic compounds"— Presentation transcript:

1 Naming ionic compounds
Binary ionic 2 different elements

2 Naming from the formula CaCl2
Always name the METAL first. The metal keeps its name. Ca = Calcium (take the name right off the PT) The NONMETAL is second. Change the ending to IDE (a new suffix) Cl2 Chlorine to chloride (ine changes to ide) Subscript: “2” after Cl means 2 Chlorine! So CaCl2 = Calcium Chloride

3 Name the Nonmetal ions below (use suffixes)
Nitrogen Oxygen Fluorine Phosphorus Sulfur Chlorine Bromine Iodine Nitride Oxide Fluoride Phosphide Sulfide Chloride Bromide Iodide

4 Name the ionic Compound
Na2S SrO Li3N CaI2 KBr Sodium Sulfide Strontium Oxide Lithium Nitride Calcium Iodide Potassium Bromide

5 Writing formulas - using Subscripts
Subscripts tell you the number of each type of ion They are placed after the ion they refer to You must use them to insure you have a correct chemical formula Example: Na3P 3 sodium ions 1 phosphorous ion

6 1 Ca2+ 2Cl1- 1 Mg2+ 1 S2- 2 Al3+ 3 O2- 1 Ca2+ 2 Br1-
Identify the individual ions that make up the substance (include charges on ions) CaCl2 MgS Al2O3 CaBr2 1 Ca2+ 2Cl1- 1 Mg2+ 1 S2- 2 Al3+ 3 O2- 1 Ca2+ 2 Br1-

7 How do we determine how many of each ion?
The goal is to have a neutral compound. Electrons lost must equal the number of electrons gained. All elements involved must be satisfied (stable) with a full outer shell of electrons

8 Overall charge must equal Zero
Example: Calcium and Chlorine Write out the ions Ca+2 and Cl-1 How many chlorine ions bond with each calcium…
