Developing and Managing Resources Session 1 Richard Nelson & Hilary Woodhead

Handbook Aims, learning outcomes and assessment. (Moodle has video walk through)

Showcase You prepare 5 minute video “Dragons Den” style- sell your favourite resource to us Part of the assessment to specifically cover learning outcome 3- “Adapt an existing resource and produce an inclusive teaching and learning resource appropriate to specialist area”.

2 minute discussion Share with your table which of these you most agree with and why: A) Classroom organisation and resources for teaching are a world apart from 100 years ago. B) When you think about it we haven’t changed that much really.

Get out your phones! Your definition of a resource (130 characters) Text to: 07537 402 400 start: B6RN

Good resources are… What does the term ‘resources’ include? What makes a ‘good’ resource?

Hand-outs

Sticking with the change theme… “The Internet and Virtual Learning Environment may or may not radically change teaching, but the technology which has probably made most difference in the past fifty years has been cheap, on-site, duplicating copying and printing.” ATHERTON, J. (2005) Teaching and Learning:  Hand-outs   [On-line] UK: Available: http://www.learningandteaching.info/teaching/handouts.htm  [18 March 2008 ]

Why use them? Question: What use is a hand-out? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Define jargon Permanent record of essentials provide background or detailed information e.g. statistics, which are not readily available elsewhere put forward a point of view or strategy as model Set or clarify tasks provide a case study for problem solving or discussion

More why… provide a complex diagram rather than students copying from projection; give step by step guide to a task- e.g. lab work outline the session with a series of bullet points per topic area summarise key points of a session or theme

What does it include? Info- e.g. reading lists Tasks- worksheet or quiz Summary of session or central theme Resources needed for specific task- e.g. photos/ quotations Gapped- i.e. part task/ part focus tool

Problems and issues- Quality – Accessibility Note taking - inhibitor? Concentration - reading ahead Attendance - ‘it’ll be in the hand-outs' Others?

Evaluate this! Looking at the hand-out critique good and bad points Be prepared to justify reasons

One type Gapped or skeletal hand-out Unlabelled diagram Headings only Actual gaps in sentences ---------------------------------------------------------- Easily differentiated Focuses concentration

PowerPoint Hand-outs Why haven’t we given you a copy of this presentation? Will we give you a copy? How do we give you a copy that’s convenient?

Resource Carousel In pairs use evaluation sheet to assess the resources on the tables 30 mins http://www.teachit.co.uk/custom_content/timer/clock3.html

It’s in the bag! What can you use this for Imagination! Link to your specialism

Reflection time Jot notes if you wish On the hand-out grade yourself! 2 mins: Think about hand-outs and all the other resources you have looked at. What are your strengths and weakness in terms of your resource use? 5 mins: Discuss the above at your table

Preparation for next class 27th November - IT3 and IT4 Evaluate one resource of you have created (thinking about Disabilty Act 2010 and Equality issues) Bring with you one resource to share with the group – hard copy NOT electronic

Discussion on apps At the end of the session Hilary suggested some apps for ipads and SMART phones etc. Dragon Dictation TeacherKit LessonNote All free Try and see if they suit
