2 ABC Counselling Concepts week 3 What is counselling? How is it different/similar to other ways of helping?

3 You will be invited to… Check in with yourself and other members of the group Consider the group contract and sign or amend and sign a draft. Make a list of helping roles and relationships – choose two and identify the types of helping involved Recognise and discuss some of the key features of counselling. Access MOODLE Homework: complete a worksheet based on today’s session. Find a definition of counselling and record the source. A prize will be awarded for the best one.

5 Check-in Each week you will be invited to check-in with yourself and the group. It involves taking a few moments to notice and to appreciate how you are. You will then be invited to share this with others in the group. During check-in, we will listen to each person as they check-in, but we will not respond verbally. Check-in provides an opportunity to focus on ourselves and others without needing to respond or to hear a response form others.

7 Our Group Contract Read the draft provided. Discuss any amendments with the group Sign a group copy and your own copy.

8 Helping roles and relationships Suggest roles and relationships which involve helping. In pairs, choose two and identify the types of helping involved in each case. Review the outcome as a whole group. You can use your work to complete the homework task.

9 What is counselling? It is a relationship It is a special form of communication It involves listening One person helps another or one person helps several other people in a group It is a highly confidential form of helping It is based on the principle of empowerment

10 What is counselling? It means helping people to clarify and address their problems It is an activity carried out by trained people It is guided by theories about the causes of problems and methods needed to help It recognises that each person is unique with unique experiences. It is guided by an ethical framework for counselling* It has specific boundaries and contracts (e.g. one hour sessions, limited/no contact outside of sessions, confidentiality)*

12 Homework Complete the work sheet exploring the differences between counselling and other ways of helping. Find a definition of counselling in a text book or on the internet. Suggested sites include MIND, BACP, Simple Psychology or Patient UK (refer to your course handbook)
